Fires caused by earthquakes an issue in BC

The British Columbia Ministry of Finance is reworking the Insurance Act, with the new legislation ready for the spring. Some experts in the insurance industry are asking that coverage for fires resulting from earthquakes be removed from regular fire insurance coverage.

Currently, if a dwelling suffers fire damage because of an earthquake, it is covered under traditional fire insurance. The new proposal would mean policyholders need separate earthquake insurance.

Nearly 40 per cent of Vancouver residents do not have earthquake insurance. If a quake hit the city, the economic consequences could be large and debilitating.

The tectonic plate movements in the area immediately west of Vancouver in the Juan de Fuca Strait are considered among the most dangerous in the world.

Experts have been warning of "The Big One" – an immense earthquake that could measure up to a magnitude of 9 on the Richter scale – could hit the lower mainland at any time. Based on geological evidence in the region, it's believed that such quakes strike every 300 to 500 years. The last major quake in that zone was Jan. 26, 1700.

The province's Minister of Finance, Carole Taylor, says that no decision on the possible change has yet been made.

IBC wants insurance tax eliminated in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is calling for the government of Newfoundland and Labrador to remove taxes on insurance premium, a tax that adds up to about $80 million each year.

According to IBC, Newfoundland and Labrador residents "have the highest insurance tax burden in the G8. For every dollar of home, car and business insurance they buy, the provincial government charges them 19.6 cents in tax."

In the fall of 2006, the government of Newfoundland and Labrador said it would review the level of tax on insurance products.

Employee benefits include health, dental … for your pet

Pet insurance is becoming an attractive benefit for employees, especially in the United States. Veterinary Pet Insurance saw its US corporate accounts grow from just 15 to 1,600 in the past six years. Today, more than 15 percent of the company's policies are from corporate accounts.

For employers, offering pet insurance is cheap, since employees pay the full cost of the benefit, unlike human health insurance where employers typically absorb most of the cost. Employees generally get a discount of five or 10 percent if pet policies are obtained through their company.

Major American companies including Home Depot, Walt Disney Co., and Comcast Corp. currently offer the pet insurance benefit to their employees. There's no word on which, if any, Canadian companies are doing the same.

What people are saying about ILScorp

We appreciate feedback from all of our clients. It helps us develop a better eLearning environment for professionals across the country. We recently received an e-mail from an ILScorp subscriber. See what he had to say about an ILScorp course:

I have completed your online course "Auto Theft - A Trans-Canada Problem" and I have a couple of comments.

It seems that as brokers, we must always defend our industry and the role we play. I pride myself on the professional service we provide our clients.

At any opportunity, I will discuss how we as brokers and our insurers have responded on claims that occur. Too often, however, we tend to look at individual claims rather than the big picture. The information that was included in this is that "big picture" of exactly how much the insurance industry must respond.

I intend to have a meeting in our office next week to discuss the subject.

This is yet another tool to answer the question "Why are my insurance costs so high and what can I do to control them?" … Basic Risk Management at its best!

I will also encourage other staff members to take this course online.

Well Done.

What's a CVN and why do you need it?

A recent e-mail from an ILScorp subscriber:

"I tried to order a subscription but your system will not accept my credit card without my CVN. What's a CVN and why do you need it? In all of my training in identity theft prevention, including through some of ILScorp's own courses, we were told not to give out much personal information."
This question comes up from time to time and we are thrilled that our subscribers are taking an active stance in protecting their own identity.

Identity theft is a big issue. PhoneBusters, an anti-fraud call-centre run by the RCMP, Ontario Provincial Police and the Canadian government, received more than 7,800 calls from identity theft victims reporting losses to themselves and to businesses totaling more than $16 million in 2006. However, PhoneBusters estimates those numbers represent only a small percentage – perhaps 5 per cent – of the actual figure.

A CVN refers to the "Cardholder Verification Number". This is a three digit number on the backside of a credit card or for American Express a four digit number on the front of the credit card. For card-not-present transactions, such as online or telephone orders, the CVN is an important security feature. When a CVN is requested, it helps to confirm that a genuine card is being used during a transaction by validating that the purchaser has the approval from the cardholder to carry out the transaction.

In many cases of identity theft, a thief will not have physical access to the credit card itself. Therefore they will not have knowledge of the CVN.

ILScorp uses secure Internet servers to ensure that all data and sensitive information sent is secure and safe. When we ask you for your CVN, we are really trying to reduce fraudulent transactions.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any further concerns about privacy or Internet security at ILScorp.
