Industry Briefs

One in five eligible Canadians are not taking advantage of employer-matched savings programs

Of the perks and benefits of employment, employer-matched savings programs are among the most coveted and desirable.

A recent survey by Sun Life Financial found that nearly 40 percent of Canadians who currently work have access to employer-matched savings programs such as group RRSPs and Deferred Profit Sharing Plans, but not nearly that many are taking advantage of the programs.

Sun Life Financial found that one-in-five employees are leaving this "free money", essentially forgoing anywhere from a 25 to 150 percent return on their investment.

Facts:

  • 21% of people who do not take advantage of employer-matched savings programs say that it is because they have no desire to do so.
  • 14% of people who do not take advantage of employer-matched savings programs say that it is because they do not have money to spare.
  • 6% of people who do not take advantage of employer-matched savings programs say that it is because they prefer to invest on their own.
  • Women are more likely (73%) than men (65%) to take advantage of matching programs.
  • Atlantic Canadians are the most likely to take advantage of these programs (78%).
  • Quebecers are the least likely in Canada to belong to employer-matched savings programs (59%).

Residential title insurance now offered by The Co-operators

According to the Canadian Institute of Mortgage Brokers, real estate title fraud is costing Canadians as much as $300 million each year. To protect homeowners, The Co-operators are now offering residential title insurance to current homeowners through First Canadian Title.

Title insurance protects homeowners against challenges to the ownership of their home, including fraud, forgery and title defects. Identity theft and forged documents are often used to transfer a registered owner's title without their knowledge or permission.

The Co-operators is the first Canadian-owned multi-product insurance company to make this coverage available with First Canadian Title.
